Can't Wait for '24' Season 7? Try "The Rookie"

Posted by Regnard Raquedan | 1:27 PM | | 0 comments »

The seventh season of television series '24' may be debuting in January 2009, but that shouldn't stop you from enjoying adrenalin-pumping action. The Rookie: Day 3 Extraction could be the series that could fill your need for such a series.

Presented by Degree © for Men, The Rookie: Day 3 Extraction is a series of exclusive web episodes and is based on the '24' universe. The series' plot features American Counter Terrorism agent Jason Blaine in a rescue mission to save his boss from a drug cartel in Mexico. The series has six episodes and runs between four to six minutes each.

The digital shorts are directed by Rodney Charters, who directed past episodes of '24.' Here's the first episode of the The Rookie: Day 3 Extraction:

All episodes can be watched in the series' YouTube channel.

22 months from now, Jay Leno will step down from "The Tonight Show," ending his run with the talk show he started hosting in 1992. Taking his place is the witty Conan O'Brien, the current host of "Late Night with Conan O'Brien."

The hoopla generated by this situation has centered on what Jay Leno will do next-- Will he still host? Will he still stay with NBC? Will he accept the alleged offers ABC, Fox and Sony are fielding?

NBC CEO Jeff Zucker has said that the decision to let Leno walk has been the most difficult in his career and I could imagine that-- Who can really replace Jay Leno? I'm a big fan of Conan O'Brien and I watch the two talk shows and I could say that the styles of the two hosts are different, with Leno being more audience-friendly and O'Brien more edgy.

One big question in mind is which band will play on The Tonight Show when Conan starts? Right now, Kevin Eubanks' band is handling the music but Conan seems to have a tight relationship with Max Weinberg and his band, The Max Weinberg 7. The TV show scene will really be interesting 22 months from now, perhaps more interesting than the shows themselves.

George of the Jungle is back!

The vine-swinging character from the 1960's has been re-imagined and is will be debuting at the Cartoon Network this January 18, 2008. New episodes will be shown every Thursday, 7:30pm (ET/PT)

For those who do not know George of the Jungle, he's the protector of a jungle (a la Tarzan) who always seem to not look when he swings, thus the frequent tree-slamming. This new series brings back George's friends like Ape, Ursula, Shep and the Tookie Tookie Bird; the Cartoon Network version also adds a new character named Magnolia.

Here's a preview of the new series intro:

In 1997, a movie aptly titled George of the Jungle was released and it starred Brendan Frasier on the starring role and Leslie Mann as Ursula.

Ruben Gonzaga of Davao City was voted Big Winner of Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition 2! The comedian from the southern Philippines edged Filipino-Canadian beauty queen and model Riza Santos for the coveted television title.

The win makes Ruben the first male winner of the Pinoy Big Brother franchise of ABS-CBN. (Nene Tamayo, Keana Reeves, Kim Chiu, Beatriz Saw were the previous Big Winners). Ruben Gonzaga, hovever, fits the profile of the previous Pinoy Big Brother edition winners: he is perceived to be of low economic standing and has great appeal to the Filipino masses. It seems the Filipino television viewer is a big fan of the underdog.

Veronica Mars Contest from Neptune Rising

Posted by Regnard Raquedan | 11:56 AM | , | 1 comments »

I'm a big fan of grassroots activity from fans and Neptune Rising is one of the notable ones I've encountered. From their own words, they are "fans that are working on keeping hope alive for Veronica Mars." Their goals include the creation of a Veronica Mars comic book or movie and they are currently working on syndication for the show. Talk about devotion to Veronica Mars!

The community has launched the Neptune Noir contest where they will be giving away a copy of Neptune Noir: Unauthorized Investigations into Veronica Mars. The book is a collection of essays on the hit drama Veronica Mars, and is not authorized by CW, the creators or producers of Veronica Mars, or any entity associated with the show.

So Veronica Mars fans, join the contest and you may be the fan who'll take home Neptune Noir!

  • 24 episodes (w/select episode commentaries)
  • Deleted scenes (w/optional commentary by Chris Carter)
  • “The Truth About Season Four” 30-minute documentary

If you don't know the answer to the main question, here's a hint: The answers can be found in this write-up from the The X-Files' producers:
Relive FBI Agent Fox Mulder’s (David Duchovny) desperate search for the truth after witnessing the alien abduction of his sister when he was a young boy. Follow Agent Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) as she and Mulder encounter growing proof of the existence of extraterrestrials and an undeniable government conspiracy to cover up that truth. Then join Agent John Doggett (Robert Patrick) and Agent Monica Reyes (Annabeth Gish) as they too become believers while delving deeper into the unsolved FBI cases that are known as “The X-Files.”
Now, all you have to do is post a comment or make a blog post, and the special edition X-Files Season 4 DVD could be yours this Chirstmas!

Crunching the Pinoy Big Brother (Season 2) Numbers

Posted by Regnard Raquedan | 1:15 AM | | 0 comments »

I've been watching Pinoy Big Brother (Season 2) lately (who isn't?) and ABS-CBN, the Philippine network broadcasting the show, released figures to discredit the emails going on accusing the show of rigging.

I've also been working with Excel a lot lately and so I decided to crunch the numbers from the show during a break:

10th Eviction 11th Eviction
Housemate Percentage Votes Housemate Percentage Votes Increase
HM#1 20.83% 329,108 HM#1 22.74% 560,690 70.37%
HM#2 18.19% 287,397 HM#2 19.94% 491,651 71.07%
HM#3 18.00% 284,395 HM#3 19.70% 485,734 70.80%
HM#4 17.84% 281,867 HM#4 17.38% 428,531 52.03%
HM#5 15.60% 246,476 HM#5 13.89% 342,479 38.95%
Bruce 5.79% 91,480 Bruce 6.35% 156,569 71.15%
Nel 3.75% 59,249

Total 1,579,973
Total 2,465,654 56.06%

What does the table show us? As Nel got evicted on the 10th Eviction Night, he was a longshot to get in as he almost trailed Bruce (as revealed by the show's director Lauren Dyogi) by around 42,000 votes. The table also shows us Bruce got the biggest percentage increase after the 10th Eviction Night, and was the Housemate whose supporters worked hard the most. However, Bruce never had a fighting chance since the 5th highest vote-getter had twice the number of votes.

Assuming the rankings did not change over the Eviction Nights, the figures also indicate that the Top 3 vote-getters had comparable percentage increases, meaning their supporters had relatively done the same effort in saving their pick. This consistency could lead us to conclude that the Top 3 ranked Housemates remained the same in-between eviction nights.

What's interesting to note is that support for the the Housemates ranked #4 and #5 had lagged. This could imply if this trend continues, Housemate #5 will have no chance in catching up with Housemate #4.

If Housemate #5 has any mathematical chance of getting to the Big4 is that Housemate #4 retains his/her growth rate and Housemate#5 increases by 210% (or gets a vote total three times of what he/she has right now!). It would be now safe to assume that Housmate#5 is out of it. If that Housemate is not evicted by Thursday, either a his/her supporters have pulled of the greatest revolution since EDSA in 1986 or ABS-CBN pulled off the biggest miracle since Garci in 2001.

Who is Housemate#5? Your guess is as good as mine.
