Movie Review: The Bourne Legacy (2012)

I'm a little apprehensive to call The Bourne Legacy a sequel to The Bourne Ultimatum simply because the focus of the story is no longer Jason Bourne (Matt Damon), but Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner). Moreover, the effort Legacy makes to expand the Bourne universe actually makes things  iffy for the audience.

The movie spends the first 30 minutes giving little hints and glimpses of the Aaron Cross, Treadstone (the stealth government project), and Jason Bourne in a way that people will just be confused about what's going on. It gradually becomes clearer, but I felt it took too much in making it a fully satisfying watch.

The film is listless for the most part, but thanks to a action scenes shot in Manila, the movie is resuscitated to life. The chase scene in the slum areas makes this worth the price of admission.

The Bourne Legacy may have suffered the "reboot syndrome" of re-introducing the elements of the previous films in a flimsy manner, but it is a solid action movie.

Rating: 3.5/5
