Movie Review: Johnny English Reborn (2011)

I don't know about this "rebirth," but Johnny English Reborn is a comedy of stretching a gag.

Rowan Atkinson returns as the eponymous Johnny English, an obvious satirical stab at James Bond and the super-spy mythos. This sequel pretty much rehashes what Atkinson is very good at-- comic situations in very uncomfortable environments. I'm sure followers of Mr. Bean will see the similarity in the humor here.

Apart from the comedy of the bungling Johnny English, the film's story is pretty pedestrian. There's a plot to assassinate the Chinese Premier and English and his sidekick Agent Tucker (Daniel Kaluuya) finds a way to save the day. Not much innovation in this department, if you ask me.

Johnny English Reborn is a redundant comedy that will elicit laughs on a few choice moments but I'd rather wait for a reincarnation of this middling franchise.
