Movie Review: Super 8 (2011)

Director J.J. Abrams puts on his remixing hat and creates a hybrd of Cloverfield and Stand By Me. The resulting mashup is Super 8. (No, it's not a superhero flick)

Set in 1980, the film is a coming of age story where the events are set into motion by a mysterious train crash. The incident gets the classic J.J. Abrams treatment where we see glimpses of the mysterious being but feel the threat. The kids in the movie play their roles well and bring us back to a the era of The Goonies and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Special mention to Joel Courtney and Elle Fanning for giving great performances.

The action scenes are riveting and there's a healthy dose of humor, and there's not much to dislike in the film.

Super 8 is a must-watch in my books and I'm sure a lot of folks will find out that while it's not a superhero movie, it's really super in its own right.

Rating: 4.5/5
