From 2005 to 2009, Richard Gutierrez has appeared in a romantic film that was shown in February. After taking a break last year, Richard Gutierrez is back to Valentine's Day films with My Valentine Girls.
This time, his latest film follows an anthology format, with the three separate stories. We have "Soulmates" directed by Dominic Zapata, "BBFF" directed by Andoy Ranay, and "Gunaw" (Apocalypse) directed by Chris Martinez. The romantic stories are quite diverse, thanks to the infusion of supernatural, dramatic, and comical elements in each of the chapter.
I found the off-beat story "Gunaw" by Chris Martinez as the best of the lot, where we see Richard Gutierrez in an unlikely pairing with comedienne Eugene Domingo in story of a love story in a 28 Days Later-type of world. The one I least liked was "BBFF," a relationship drama focused on friends becoming lovers. Newcomer Solenn Heusaff is a pretty screen presence, but her acting chops are still raw.
My Valentine Girls has something for everyone and it's a safe start to revive an annual film tradition of Richard Gutierrez in a Valentine's Day date flick.
