In a film genre that ironically tries to distance itself from the animated fairy tales of old, the folks at Disney came up with Tangled, the story of Rapunzel. If you ask me, the gamble worked because Tangled is such an enjoyable film.
The film is homage to the "And they lived happily ever after" tales and the timing couldn't have been more perfect. A lot of the animated stuff have been trying to be politically correct and referential to pop culture. Tangled never shied to be upfront on what it is: a musical fairy tale that evokes memories of The Little Mermaid.
Another thing I liked about this is the great use of a little number of main characters. Rapunzel (Mandy Moore) is shown as a curious teenager who is unsure about a lot of things and Flynn (Zachary Levi) is a smooth-talking thief with a good heart. Then there's Mother Gothel (Donna Murphy)-- she's arguably one of the best Disney villains of all time.
Tangled is great family entertainment that shouldn't be missed.
