Movie Review: Paranormal Activity (2009)

After watching Paranormal Activity, I couldn't believe that it was only made with a $15,000 budget. Why? Because it carried the suspense and terror of a big budget horror flick.

Directed by Oren Peli, the indie film succeeds in setting the atmosphere and building-up the story. Filmed with a rough documentary style similar to the Blair Witch Project, it starts very slow then progresses to a big finish. For me, this works because Peli taps into our collective fears of what could be lurking in the dark. There are no big bangs here, just subtle suggestions that work effectively.

People may find the jagged camera movements a but unsettling, but it's used to maximum effect-- the lead characters (Katie and Micah) are just simple everyday folks who want to get to the bottom of mysterious events happening by trying to capture it on camera. This mundaneness makes the horror even more believable. The pacing needs a little work though as the shocks kinda get repetitive at some point.

Paranormal Activity was just made with $15,000 but was able to make $100 million. I think there's a very good reason for that. For full enjoyment, watch this film with your friends. :P
