Movie Review: Ninja Assassin (2009)

Ninja Assassin is a throwback action movie-- it offers hard-core violence and nothing much else. But it's that one-dimensional aspect of the movie that makes it enjoyable.

Starring Asian sex symbol Rain (Speed Racer), the movie is an update of the ninja movies of the 1980's and putting a video game feel to it. If you ask me, Joel Silver and the Wachowski Brothers (producers of the film) took what made Zack Snyder's 300 cool and placed it in the ninja action genre.

However, as I've mentioned, the film offers so little apart from the action scenes. The intertwining of the lead character's origin with a conspiracy plot doesn't really work for me. However, the film's occasional campyiess is a source of unintentional comedy.

If you're into gory action scenes and Matrix-like sword fights, then Ninja Assassin will make your day and keep you buzzing about the film for a few days. Otherwise, watch New Moon.
