Movie Review: Astro Boy (2009)

Shiny, slick, and fast-paced can be words to describe Astro Boy the film and the eponymous character.

Unfortunately, both also lack the emotional hooks to make a true animated classic.

The film is position to be family entertainment fare, but I felt there were themes that were too mature for the young kids (the dealing of Dr. Tenma with the loss of his son and his disownment of Astro Boy are some). Apart from that, there's a lot of political underpinnings that are too hard to ignore.

Astro Boy also draws a lot from classics such as The Wizard of Oz, Pinocchio and even Wall-E. To a certain degree, it tries to explore themes like the "machine with a heart" and the humanity of automatons. But at the end of the day, the film is able to come up with a moderately-satisfying action animated movie.
