Movie Review: Shoot 'Em Up

Shoot 'Em Up is a movies that sticks to its guns, literally. It's a straight-up action satire that screams "Tarantino!" Think of it as Kill Bill with guns.

The title should give the viewer a clue what the movie is all about-- a violent shootfest. Clive Owen (Children of Men, Derailed, Closer) plays Mr. Smith, a straight-shooting bad ass who gets caught in a corporate/government plot. Owen plays the lone wolf-type character with coolness and wit, which is a nod to the classic action heroes. Paul Giamatti (Sideways, Lady in the Water) plays Hertz, the main antagonist, who is a truly ironic character. (A family man caught up in the business of violence). Monica Bellucci (The Matrix Reloaded) rounds up the main cast as the good-hearted whore, DQ.

The movie itself is one big spoof of the action genre. The action in the movie is off the wall, and silly to a certain degree. There's some self-deprecating humor and references to action movie cliché's. However, despite the lack of logic and realism, Shoot 'Em Up has a distinct style which captures the audience.

All in all, Shoot 'Em Up is a very enjoyable movie for those who can appreciate a good action movie and can take the violence.
