Movie Review: Sunshine

The sun is dying and a group of astronauts has been sent to revive it. The plan is to bring a massive bomb to the sun, leave it there then detonate it on the core. Sounds simple? But as the story has it, it is NEVER that simple, especially with director Danny Boyle (28 Days Later) at the helm.

While the premise looks simple the surface, Sunshine is a gripping sci-fi adventure that brings earth's last hope on the edge. The diverse cast is led by Cillian Murhpy (Red Eye, Batman Begins) and Chris Evans (Fantastic Four).

The movie over-all is very claustrophobic, a far cry from space rescue dramas like Armageddon and Deep Impact. It is more related to Event Horizon, but with much stronger visuals and production. The last act of the movie seems too jagged, but it adds to the suspense and confusion of the situation. Also, the use of split-second cut scenes on certain moments add a chilling touch.

Sunshine is not your typical space adventure but is highly recommended for its deft storytelling and visuals.
